Discussion Guide
In week one, we saw how Jonah’s decision to run from God affected those around him, yet God still worked through the situation. In week two, Jonah’s desperate prayer from inside the fish reminded us that God’s grace reaches us even when our own choices have led us into trouble. This week, Jonah faces God’s call again. As we read chapter 3, we’ll explore how obedience affects others and what it means to turn toward God with genuine repentance.
What you will need: A Bible or Bible app, a notebook, a pen, and a highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.
Jump Start
Share a time when you were a kid and got in trouble, and how your parents made you apologize. Could your parents tell the difference if you were genuinely sorry or just sorry you got caught?
Read Jonah 3
1. How does Jonah’s obedience in chapter 3 affect others differently from his disobedience in chapter 1? What does this suggest about the influence of our choices?
2. In verses 6-8, how do the king’s actions and instructions show that he takes God’s warning seriously?
3. The king calls people to pray and stop their evil behavior. What do you think is the difference between feeling bad about something we’ve done and having genuine repentance? What does this teach us about the relationship between asking forgiveness and turning from sin?
4. In verses 9-10, what does the king hope for, and what does God see? What does God’s response reveal about His mercy and how He feels about people who are far from Him? How should this shape the way we respond to people in our lives when they have genuinely asked forgiveness?
Optional Deeper Dive:
Read 1 John 1: 8-9
1. What contrast does John draw between denying our sin and confessing it, and what does he promise about God’s response?
2. How might God’s promise of forgiveness help you acknowledge something you may be minimizing or making excuses for?
Action Step:
This week, take a few quiet minutes to ask God to show you an area of your life where you need to turn toward Him. Be honest with Him, ask for forgiveness, and choose one practical step that reflects that change. It might be offering an apology, changing a habit, or following through on something He has asked you to do. Ask for His help and trust His mercy as you take that step.
