Discussion Guide
Throughout Jonah’s story, we’ve seen that our choices affect others, God’s grace reaches us even when we run from Him, and His faithfulness gives us another opportunity to respond. Chapters 1–3 remind us that obedience matters, and that repentance opens the way for a new beginning. In chapter 4, we’ll consider how the grace we’ve received can change our hearts toward others.

Read Jonah 4
1. Jonah 4:1–4. What does Jonah’s complaint reveal about why he ran away? How can he understand God’s character so well and still struggle with what God chose to do?
2. Jonah 4:5–9. How does Jonah respond when the plant grows and then dies? What do his changing reactions reveal about what matters most to him? Where do we put our comfort “plant” over God’s plan?
3. Jonah 4:10–11. What contrast does God draw between Jonah’s concern for the plant and His concern for Nineveh? How does this challenge Jonah’s view of the people there?
4. When have you found yourself doing the right thing with a reluctant or resentful heart? What might God be inviting you to recognize or change?
5. Who is your “Nineveh,” a person or group you struggle to extend grace toward? How might remembering God’s patience with you change the way you see them?
Optional Deeper Dive
Read Luke 15:28–32. How does the father respond to his older son’s anger, and how is that similar to God’s response to Jonah? What does this reveal about God’s mercy toward people whose hearts still need to change?
Action Step
This week, take a moment to pray, “God, what are You trying to change in my heart?” Is there someone that I would rather see receive God’s justice over His grace? Ask God for a heart and response that reflects His compassion: pray for them, listen, or start with an act of kindness.
