Tuesday - EVEN WHEN

EVEN WHEN

J.D. Ketterman, LCDR, USN (RET)

Today’s Scripture: “But, I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high” Psalm 69:29, ESV

Theme: Even when you are alone and suffering, even when the battle seems unwinnable, Jesus has not deserted you.

IN THE PIT

I had to rewind the movie Greyhound three times and finally turn on the subtitles to understand what the Captain mumbled when he learned the German pack of U-boats was closing in on the convoy. It was the last half of Matthew 10:16; “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” This was his mental mantra throughout the crossing of “the pit.” And now, his worst fear was being realized. The Captain stood alone at the top. The wolf pack was closing in on his flock. Spiritually, he could fall into despair. He needed to keep his wits and control his emotions for the sake of his command. Recalling this metaphoric verse reminded him of how to handle this burden of command and that Jesus was with him.

FAITH ON DISPLAY

Praying in front of his men was a proclamation of his faith, an acknowledgment that Jesus was always with him. Jesus, by His teachings, persecution, and resurrection, warranted the Captain’s praise through prayer. He demonstrated that Jesus was with him and powerful, able to change the tide of the battle. Therefore, God was also with the crew.

Make It Personal: The way we live our lives must be a testament to our faith. Our personal example must reveal our confidence that Jesus is with us... ALWAYS. His words can help us master our fears, bring comfort to our suffering, calm our anger, and bring joy. Our example, our discipleship, must be evidence to others that we walk with Him.

Pray: Father God, help me to grow in faith and confidence that You are with me always. You are the solution. Even when I am in the shadow of death, but You are my constant reminder to “Fear not.” Help me to keep this faith and to be a guide for others to Your love and comfort. In Your Name I pray. Amen.
