JESUS SATISFIES
Sarah Sloan
Today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.’” John 6:35 (ESV)
Theme: Only Jesus can satisfy the deepest needs and longings of your soul.
BREAD OF LIFE
In John 6, Jesus makes a bold, life-altering statement: “I am the bread of life.” He’s not offering a meal--He’s offering Himself. He’s offering soul satisfaction. Our world is filled with people hungry for meaning, identity, and love. We chase after things--relationships, success, pleasure, and approval--hoping to fill the emptiness inside. Yet no matter how much we consume, the hunger remains.
SOUL SATISFACTION
In the movie Jesus Revolution, the younger generation searched to fill the spiritual void through drugs and “free love.” Interestingly, the older generations were no different from the youthful hippies. They sought fulfillment through different avenues; those of material success, legalism, and social status. Yet, no matter the source, earthly things can never give permanent satisfaction. Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well, “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14, ESV).
NEVER HUNGER
Whether young or old, rich or poor, all of us have one thing in common: an ache in our soul that only Jesus can heal. And He offers Himself—eternal nourishment for our weary hearts. When Jesus says, “whoever comes to me shall not hunger,” He’s inviting us to stop striving and start receiving. Only in Him do we find rest, peace, and satisfaction that lasts.
Make It Personal: Are you trying to fill a void in your own life? Maybe it’s through busyness, distractions, or chasing after the approval of others. Ask yourself honestly: What am I turning to for satisfaction that only Jesus can give? Think about the things that have left you empty in the past. What would it look like to turn from them and come to Jesus instead?
Pray: Jesus, I confess that I often look to other things and other people to fill the emptiness inside. I’ve tried so many things, but nothing satisfies like You. Help me to come to You alone for the nourishment my soul craves. Teach me to trust that You are enough. Fill my heart and soul with Your presence and peace. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
