Thursday - CHECK YOUR INFLUENCERS

CHECK YOUR INFLUENCERS

Kimberly Lawrence

Today's Scripture: “I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” Romans 16:17, NIV

Theme: Keep away from the people who cause divisions and contradict Jesus’ teachings that you previously learned.

A SLOW FADE

There is a song by the Christian band, Casting Crowns, entitled “Slow Fade”. It’s a cautionary tale about the seemingly little things that draw you away from a Christ-centered life. The lyrics refer to what you allow yourself to hear, see, think, and do that make “black and white turn to grey”. In today’s Scripture, Romans 16:17, Paul calls believers to be wise and remain vigilant, staying away from people who bring division and contradiction to biblical principles. He’s not advocating for willful blindness, but for an understanding of core teachings and the avoidance of harmful disputes.

THE POWER OF PERSUASION

I can be easily persuaded. It’s not a quality I’m particularly proud of, but I am the person who should never stop at the “free sample” kiosk at Costco or accidentally answer a solicitor’s phone call. Perhaps my engagement with people starts out just trying to be a polite listener but, before I know it, I can become wrapped up in what they are “selling.” I’ve had to learn to become more cautious and discerning, evaluating motives when I listen to others. Worldly views and the demand for social acceptance can cause a drift from God’s call for His followers. Subtle agendas or charming rhetoric can become overly influential. We must not allow anything that draws us away from sound doctrine to become rooted in our minds.

HOW DO I KNOW?

Fortunately, we have the ultimate instruction manual! When disagreements or division occur, the Bible should be our first resource for test and truth. A thirst for knowledge and study of Scripture is a means to not only know God but to teach, reproof, correct and train (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We have an obligation not to allow people who are solely committed to division and contradiction to have a foothold in our lives. Though natural disagreements will surface, they cannot fester. Paul’s urging in today’s passage is for us to protect the purity of the church and the unity of believers, knowing what is good and what is evil. The church remains a place where the truth of the Gospel is honored and upheld.

Make It Personal: You’ve probably heard the adage “the best defense is a good offense.” We must prepare in advance to be armed with confidence and discernment. Spend time learning the Word of God so, when you begin to sense overwhelming discord, you can compare all claims and motives against the ultimate Truth. Be cautious of who you allow extended time in your most intimate circle. Are they people who build you up and encourage you in your faith journey, or are they persistent doubt creators? Choose wisely!

Pray: God, thank You for Your Word and the guidance it provides. Please give me a discerning heart and mind. I pray for wisdom to recognize people and situations meant to draw me away from You as well as the courage to be selective about those I allow closest to me. Fill our church with peace, understanding and protection from division. Amen.
